The de facto authorities of Georgia’s de facto Abkhazia region and Syria signed several statements on Thursday in which they expressed support for “Russia’s special operation in Ukraine” and condemned the West’s responsive moves towards Russia, local media reported.

The local media outlets said that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic, Faisal Mekdad , who was on an “official visit” to Sukhumi, and the de facto Foreign Minister of Abkhazia, Inal Ardzinba, had signed several agreements.

The de facto government of Abkhazia opened its embassy in the Syrian Arab Republic back in October 2020.

Syria recognized the “independence” of Georgia’s two Russian occupied regions of Tskhinvali (  South Ossetia) and Abkhazia on May 29, 2018, after which Georgia cut off diplomatic relations with Syria.

In 2018, the then de facto President of the de facto Republic of Abkhazia, Raul Khajimba, who visited the Syrian Arab Republic, awarded the President of Syria Bashar Assad.

The main foreign ally of the Syrian government is Russia, with the help of which Abkhazia is trying to gain international recognition from various countries.

Only Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua,Nauru and Syria have recognized the Georgian occupied regions as independent states since the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
