Georgia is expected to receive a questionnaire from the European Union in an accelerated manner next week which will contain hundreds of questions the Georgian government must answer on whether Georgia’s democracy level is sufficient for the country to be granted EU candidate country status, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said today.
This will be the first serious move towards EU membership after Georgia officially applied for this earlier this month, shortly after Ukraine did so in the face of Russian aggression.
The Foreign Ministry said that Georgia is actively preparing for the mandatory procedures related to its EU membership bid, stating that the Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili instructed the European Integration Governmental Commission on April 1 to “effectively coordinate” all procedures related to the application, including those connected with the questionnaire.
“We are sure Georgia will cope with the procedures effectively as Georgia has already implemented a number of democratic reforms. The fact that Georgia will receive the questionnaire so quickly, along with other associated members, is the confirmation of the EU’s support for Georgia’s integration process and the recognition of the success of Georgian reforms,” said the Foreign Ministry.
The special questionnaire is expected to contain an average of 2,500 questions.
On this basis, the European Commission will draw a conclusion and submit it to the Council of the European Union which should unanimously grant the EU candidate country status.
