Georgian Ambassador to EU Vakhtang Makharoblishvili has been summoned to the EU office in Brussels over recently leaked files in Georgia on clerics and politicians, the EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell says.

The files also allegedly contain information on diplomats obtained through illegal surveillance.

Hartzell says that the meeting was held at EU Brussels’ office yesterday.

He said that the EU takes illegal surveillance issues ‘very seriously.’

Earlier this month Georgian media outlets received up to 30,000 personal data files which had been allegedly leaked from the country’s State Security Service.

The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case.
