Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani says that the recent arrest of Georgia’s ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, who is a citizen of Ukraine and holding an official post there, will not make an influence on the friendly relations of the two countries.

“We have a close cooperation with Ukraine in all directions and our relations have significantly strengthened in the last period,” Zalkaliani said.

He stated that the representative of the Georgian embassy to Ukraine will inform the Ukrainian government on all details regarding the arrest.

The Ukrainian foreign minister says that the country will ensure all support for Saakashvili as he is a citizen of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian consul is scheduled to meet with Saakashvili in the 12nd prison of Rustavi, in eastern Georgia.

Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi late yesterday.
