The leader of the opposition party Strategy Agmashenebeli, Giorgi Vashadze, on Wednesday condemned an incident involving the German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, describing it as a "shameful, unacceptable and anti-Georgian act."
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday in the coastal city of Batumi, where Ambassador Fischer was verbally abused by an individual identified in media reports as “Mr. Kochiashvili.” According to the German Embassy, the confrontation ended when bystanders intervened and the perpetrator left the scene. No police were present at the time.
In a social media post, Vashadze claimed the incident was not an isolated act, but rather a politically motivated provocation orchestrated by what he termed "the regime" - a reference to the ruling Georgian Dream party. He accused the government of fostering anti-Western sentiment and said the attack reflected years of state-led propaganda aimed at undermining Georgia’s European aspirations.
“This was not just a provocation, but an organized and motivated attack by the regime against a friend of the Georgian people,” Vashadze wrote. “It is shameful that the ambassador of a country that supports Georgia’s EU accession was subjected to such behavior.”
The opposition leader went on to thank Georgian citizens who supported Ambassador Fischer during the incident, calling them “the true Georgia – European, free and dignified.”
“Our place is not in the Russian swamp, but in the European family. Whoever fights against this is doing the enemy’s work,” he added.
The German Embassy acknowledged the incident and expressed gratitude to the local residents who defended the ambassador, calling him "a guest of their city."
