On International Women’s Day, the Georgian Public Defender issued a statement outlining the key challenges women in Georgia continue to face, including domestic and gender-based violence, economic barriers, career advancement difficulties, and limited access to legal protection and essential services.

The statement also raised concerns over the abolition of mandatory gender quotas in Parliament, stressing that women still encounter both visible and invisible obstacles in political and social life.

Despite these challenges, the Public Defender acknowledged the vital role women play in Georgia’s development, emphasizing their contributions to building a fair and equal society. This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “For Every Woman and Girl: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” serves as a call to action for ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all women and girls.

The Public Defender urged the government to intensify its efforts and take concrete steps to strengthen women’s rights and gender equality in the country.
