Car rams into crowd in Mannheim, killing two and injuring 25

At least two people have been killed and around 25 others injured after a car plowed into a crowd in the western German city of Mannheim, police reported. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the downtown area as investigations continue.

Police spokesperson Stefan Wilhelm stated that the driver struck a group of people in Paradeplatz, a popular square in a pedestrian zone, on Monday. While confirming multiple injuries, officials have yet to specify the number of victims or the severity of their wounds.

“We can confirm that one perpetrator has been arrested,” Wilhelm said, adding that it remains unclear if others were involved.

Paradeplatz, a central hub in Mannheim, marks the end of a pedestrian shopping street in the city, which is home to 326,000 residents and located 85 km (53 miles) south of Frankfurt.

In response to the incident, Mannheim University Hospital activated its emergency plan, preparing for a potential mass casualty situation, according to the German news agency dpa.

The attack occurred just a day after Mannheim hosted its annual street parade as part of carnival celebrations. Across Germany, many people have taken time off to enjoy the festivities, particularly on Rose Monday, a day known for parades and events in various cities.
