Gigiaidze said recent political developments risked pushing Georgia further away from its European integration path

The European Union’s language on political developments in Georgia has become increasingly critical, Gigi Gigiaidze, senior researcher at the Economic Policy Research Center said on Wednesday.

Speaking about recent statements from Brussels, Gigiaidze said European officials were now expressing their concerns more openly, including following meetings of EU foreign ministers and debates in the European Parliament. He noted that discussions within the EU increasingly referred to possible further steps, including restrictive measures targeting individuals considered responsible for democratic backsliding.

Gigiaidze said recent political developments risked pushing Georgia further away from its European integration path and damaging the country’s prospects for closer ties with the EU. He added that criticism was no longer limited to individual lawmakers, but is also reflected in broader EU-level discussions.
