A member of the parliamentary majority in Georgia, Giorgi Sosiashvili, has claimed that the country’s church has long been the target of what he described as “liberal fascists”.

Sosiashvili said that there had been repeated attempts to undermine the Georgian Orthodox Church and weaken its role as a moral and spiritual guide for the Georgian people.

According to the MP, those aiming to weaken the Church are also unsettled by the legacy of a deceased Patriarch and are attempting to create discord and instability within the institution.

He emphasised that the Georgian Orthodox Church remains a unifying force in the country and central to the nation’s spiritual identity.
