Girchi Party MP Iago Khvichia says that the dissolution of the United National Movement (UNM) opposition party could be the shortest way for the release of former President Mikheil Saakashvili from prison.
Khvichia’s comments come on the heels of the statement of the UNM party Nugzar Tsiklauri that the party may discuss boycotting parliament in protest to the “poor health condition” of Saakashvili and the “government’s refusal to ensure quality medical care for him.”
“Leaving the parliament by the UNM will not automatically lead to the release of Saakashvili, but if the party representatives believe it, it would be right and moral to do so now,” Khvichia said today.
He stated that leaving the parliament by the UNM may lead to the dissolution of the party due to internal confrontation over the issue.
“The UNM as a party must be dissolved, because it is the weapon of the ruling party against the Georgian people. Party members have such a bad role. These people should be fired from this role which will create completely different opportunities to defeat the Georgian Dream,” Khvichia said.
Saakashvili was arrested in Georgia last year, after eight years in political exile.
