The Georgian Dream authorities, which have been in power since 2012, say that they will encourage local wheat production as due to Russia’s war in Ukraine price surged by almost 20 percent on the product in the last week alone.

Georgia has received more than 90 percent of wheat and flour from Russia and Ukraine over the past several years.

“In March alone food prices increased by about 13% across the world. We can not be disconnected from the world market as we are dependent on imports, and as you know, we import most of the wheat and flour,” Agriculture Minister Otar Shamugia stated earlier today.

He said that compared to 2020, wheat production has increased “significantly,” by about 35-36%, in Georgia  “which is very important, but I think we have more opportunities.”

Shamugia stated that the government will also develop a “concrete mechanism” to boost the country’s wheat production, “to achieve at least 50% of self-sufficiency in the coming years.”
