International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan has called Ukraine a “crime scene.”
The prosecutor of the Hague Tribunal, together with the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venediktova, visited the city of Bucha in the Kyiv region on April 13, following Russian atrocities there.
Kyiv claims that bodies and graves of more than 400 killed civilians were found after the withdrawal of the Russian occupation forces from this city.
“We are here because we have reasonable grounds to believe that crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC are being committed. We have to pierce the fog of war to get to the truth,” Khan said.
Khan has been investigating possible war crimes in Ukraine since February 28.
The prosecutor was in Ukraine in mid-March as well.
Khan also sent an official appeal to the Russian Federation to meet with representatives of relevant agencies. Moscow says Russia has no obligation to cooperate with the Hague tribunal.
