Georgia’s parliamentary majority leader, Irakli Kirtskhalia, on Sunday said Family Purity and Respect for Parents Day symbolises the country’s identity, faith and unity.

“This day carries a double significance for our country. First, it is this sacred celebration established by our spiritual father, His Holiness Ilia II. This day is about our identity, our faith, the unity of the country and love,” Kirtskhalia said.

He said the day demonstrates the values upheld by Georgian society.

“Today, our entire country and the whole world can see where our society stands and which values and principles it supports. It is also a day of double significance. It is very important that Catholicos-Patriarch Shio III is delivering the blessing for the first time today and I congratulate all of Georgia on this historic day,” he said.

Kirtskhalia wished the country “love, unity and progress through solidarity”.

“Today shows the world where the Georgian people stand. It shows how they respect their identity, history and faith, and how the entire Georgian society can unite around these values,” he added.
