Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, on Friday claimed “strong economic growth” contributes to improving public sentiment and confidence in state institutions.
Speaking to journalists in response to remarks by opposition politician Nika Gvaramia regarding the country’s economic performance, Kobakhidze said the opposition was “concerned” by Georgia’s “high rate” of economic growth.
“They are troubled by high economic growth because it means rising average salaries, improved social conditions, increased budget revenues and, consequently, stronger social support, better healthcare and more infrastructure projects,” the PM said.
Kobakhidze argued that economic development also influenced public attitudes more broadly.
“When the economy grows, public self-confidence also increases. People’s mood improves, as does their attitude towards institutions in general,” he added.
The PM also described criticism from Gvaramia as an attempt to downplay the government’s economic achievements.
Kobakhidze also commented on opposition initiatives planned for 26 May, Georgia’s Independence Day, saying they were “doomed to complete failure”.
“They do not even have the level of resources they had on 4 October,” he said. “Society will see that any such attempt is destined to fail.”
The prime minister added that 26 May “should be a day of national consolidation”.
