Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused the United States of engaging in what he described as “personal blackmail” against founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, warning that such tactics are unacceptable when it comes to matters of national interest.
Responding to a journalist’s question about the US Embassy’s recent letter regarding a proposed meeting between Ivanishvili and Ambassador Robin Dunnigan, Kobakhidze stated that Ivanishvili's refusal to engage was justified.
“Mr. Ivanishvili’s position is absolutely logical. Decisions tied to the interests of the state cannot be made under the pressure of personal blackmail,” the Prime Minister said. “Holding such a meeting under those circumstances would not have been appropriate or constructive.”
Kobakhidze claimed that the US side was already aware of Ivanishvili’s stance and expressed surprise that the embassy publicly commented on the issue.
“We were very surprised by the letter they issued. Mr. Ivanishvili had already explained his position clearly. Once this personal blackmail — which began around the time of the war in Ukraine — ends, the situation will change,” Kobakhidze asserted.
He also emphasized that official Georgian institutions remain open to dialogue with the United States through appropriate diplomatic channels.
“There are official structures and public officials fully ready to engage in consultations with the American side in any format. There are no obstacles to cooperation — but everyone must respect official protocol,” he added.
