Georgia aims to reach 8,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity production by 2028 and 10,000 MW by 2030, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said, pledging to make the country fully self-sufficient in energy.
Speaking at an event dedicated to Energy Professionals’ Day on Thursday, Kobakhidze highlighted the need for the right policies and large-scale projects to achieve the goals, citing the Khudoni, Nenskra, and Namakhvani hydroelectric projects as central to the strategy.
He also warned of past challenges, describing “economic sabotage” against strategic national projects. “Various actors, including organisations funded from abroad, directly carried out sabotage against our strategic national interests, which cost the country tens of millions of lari,” Kobakhidze said.
The prime minister added that at the time, the state lacked sufficient resources to counter such sabotage, but today, the government was strong enough to ensure the “uninterrupted implementation” of major energy projects.
