Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, has unveiled a monument to King Erekle II in the capital, describing the day as one of “deep national and symbolic significance.”
Speaking at the ceremony on Wednesday, Kobakhidze praised the 18th-century monarch as a “symbol of patriotism and love for the homeland,” noting his role in safeguarding Georgia’s national and religious identity.
“It is thanks to Erekle II’s wisdom that our country has preserved its religious and national identity. He gave us an example by which every one of us should be guided. Today’s unveiling is a tribute to his legacy and to our roots, which we must cherish to build a dignified future,” the prime minister said.
The statue, designed by Georgian sculptor Merab Merabishvili, now stands in a renovated square in Tbilisi’s historic district.
Kobakhidze also thanked Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze for his role in the project, saying the monument and the restored park would become “one of the city’s most beloved places.”
“Any country that does not care for its roots cannot build a worthy future,” he added. “This monument is another symbol of our respect for national identity, our history and our heritage.”
