Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday said around 20 million GEL had been recovered in connection with suspected corruption cases, and the funds would be directed entirely to the state budget to compensate for financial losses suffered by the government.

Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze said that since the formation of the new government on 8 February 2024, multiple measures had been taken to minimize corruption risks and ensure transparency in public administration.

“Approximately 20 million GEL has been recovered, and this money will go directly into the state budget, reimbursing losses caused by specific suspected corruption incidents,” the Prime Minister said.

Kobakhidze added that political accountability was only relevant if corruption could have been prevented earlier, but argued that the government had faced a challenging environment that limited its ability to deepen oversight before reforms were introduced.

He emphasized that the current administration had moved decisively since February:

“We have taken numerous steps to eliminate corruption - ensuring that government operations are fully transparent, including tenders, privatization, and every public procedure. This clearly shows our uncompromising stance against corruption,” he said.
