Georgian PM criticizes EU over Eurointegration statements

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has criticized European bureaucracy, stating that it is “a hostage of its own statements” and unsure how to free itself from them. He made these remarks in an interview with Georgia’s First Channel while discussing the country’s Eurointegration process and the opening of negotiations with the EU.

According to Kobakhidze, the EU ambassador directly told Georgian voters just days before the elections that if the ruling Georgian Dream party won and the opposition United National Movement did not return to power, Georgia’s Eurointegration process would be halted.

“The EU ambassador explicitly stated that under the current government, Eurointegration was suspended. He also urged voters to be active on election day to change this situation. This meant that if Georgian Dream remained in power, the Eurointegration process would stay frozen, and it could only be restored if the United National Movement returned to government,” Kobakhidze said.
