Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has condemned what he describes as a “coordinated campaign” by European institutions and elements of the US political establishment to destabilize Georgia and push the country into war with Russia.
In a press briefing on Friday, Kobakhidze, who also chairs the ruling Georgian Dream party, claimed that recent European criticism of Georgia - including threats to suspend visa-free travel and demands to reverse controversial laws - were not rooted in democratic concerns, but rather formed part of a broader strategy to punish Georgia for refusing to open a “second front” against Russia.
“The Global War Party, fully embedded in the European bureaucracy, is blackmailing Georgia because we did not get involved in the war,” Kobakhidze said, referring to the conflict in Ukraine. “We preserved peace in our country, and for that we are being punished.”
The Prime Minister accused the Joe Biden administration, former US officials, and current European leaders of pursuing a policy of “pressure and misinformation” against the Georgian government, including levelling “unfounded accusations” of alignment with Moscow.
"The previous US administration, Biden himself, Secretary of State Blinken, former Ambassador Degnan and other high-ranking officials constantly attacked Georgia, completely absurdly, without facts, accusing us of collusion with Russia and violating the strategic partnership written on paper", he claimed.
Kobakhidze reiterated his government’s support for Ukraine - citing humanitarian aid, co-sponsorship of international resolutions, and compliance with sanctions - but insisted that Georgia would not be drawn into a regional conflict. He said past calls by senior Ukrainian officials for Georgia to open a second front were evidence of a larger geopolitical strategy at play.
“They expected us to sacrifice our country, to collapse it through war. We refused - and in return, sanctions were imposed, strategic agreements were canceled, and absurd accusations were made against Georgian officials, including our honorary party chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili,” he said.
The European Parliament has recently adopted a resolution condemning Georgia’s trajectory, particularly laws on foreign influence and family values, which critics view as repressive and aligned with Russian-style governance.
Kobakhidze dismissed the concerns, calling the EU’s actions “politically motivated” and unrelated to genuine European values.
“What does a law on transparency or family values have to do with visa liberalization?” he asked. “The answer is: nothing. It is pure pressure aimed at government change.”
He alleged that the EU was using the threat of visa suspension and economic measures to destabilize the government and empower the “radical opposition,” which he accused of being willing to “drag the country into war.”
In a pointed reference to US domestic politics, Kobakhidze expressed support for President Donald Trump and his efforts to “destroy the Deep State,” while warning that even a change in administration might not alter Western policy toward Georgia unless the underlying dynamics changed.
“We hope President Trump succeeds, but we are also realistic. If the Deep State is not destroyed but merely rebranded, Europe may still be dragged into full-scale war, and Georgia along with it.”
Kobakhidze further insisted that Georgia would continue to defend its sovereignty and peace, regardless of international pressure.
“We will not let external forces decide our fate,” he declared. “Our people gave us a renewed mandate in 2024 to preserve stability, and we will not betray that trust.”
