Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has expressed his condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church and the nation following the death of His Holiness, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II.

In his statement, Kobakhidze said “With the passing of our spiritual father, His Holiness, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, an extraordinary era in the history of our Church and state has come to an end. His leadership coincided with some of the most challenging and transformative years for Georgia. Throughout this historical journey, he remained the spiritual guide and symbol of unity for our people. Through his wisdom, love for others, boundless patience, and capacity for forgiveness, he strengthened the faith in our hearts.”

The PM added that the Patriarch’s contributions went beyond the spiritual realm, playing a critical role in preserving national identity, protecting traditions, and reinforcing statehood. “Through his selfless service to God, the homeland, and humanity, Ilia II has secured his place among the greatest figures in our multi-century history,” he said.

Kobakhidze concluded by urging Georgians and future generations to honor and preserve the Patriarch’s legacy, adding “may his memory remain eternal.”

Patriarch Ilia II, who led the Georgian Orthodox Church for decades, passed away on 17 March at the age of 93.
