Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday said investing in sports meant investing in the country’s future, the health of the younger generation, and the champions of tomorrow.

“Investment in sports is investment in our future, in the health of our children, in our future champions,” Kobakhidze said at the opening of a new multi-functional sports complex in the western city of Zugdidi, adding that sports development also brought economic benefits through job creation and new investment opportunities.

“I am confident that Zugdidi’s new sports complex will contribute to the development of sports in this region and across the country, fostering the growth of many new champions. I wish peace and progress to our country”, he added.

Kobakhidze stressed that Georgia must strive to become “the new Croatia” - a small country with world-class sporting achievements. He highlighted that in 2023, Georgian athletes won a record 1,259 medals on the international stage, underscoring the nation’s talent and potential.

“Georgia is already a small country with great sporting success, but we must become a small country with the highest sporting achievements, including in team sports. Achieving this requires long-term vision, consistent investment, and the creation of infrastructure like this complex”, he said.
