Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday said decrees had been signed to establish “several dozen” new football centres across the country.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the renovated Avaza football centre in the capital city of Tbilisi, Kobakhidze added the Government had “ambitious plans in all directions” of sports development, the Government Administration said.

“This is an extraordinary football centre, fully renewed [...] This is one of the most valuable investments - not only in high-performance sports, but in promoting a healthy lifestyle, which is crucial for our country and society”, he said.

The Prime Minister emphasised that growing public interest in sports, especially football, was driven by the achievements of Georgian players in recent years. He said expanding infrastructure was essential to sustain and develop this success.

“Just this week, decrees were signed to create several dozen such football centres nationwide, in our regions [...] we plan multifunctional sports centres. I am confident in the future Georgian football and Georgian sports in general will achieve even greater success, and the Government will spare no effort to support this”, he noted.
