Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze sharply criticized a recent joint statement signed by 17 European foreign ministers and the EU High Representative, calling it “deeply regrettable” and “saturated with disinformation.”

Speaking to journalists during a visit to Samegrelo, Kobakhidze claimed the letter misrepresents the political situation in Georgia, particularly the arrests of opposition figures and individuals involved in violent incidents.

“This letter is unfortunately filled with disinformation,” he said. “The evaluations about the arrest of politicians are completely detached from reality. The same applies to the passages about the imprisonment of so-called violent individuals—those parts are also entirely based on falsehoods.”

The Prime Minister expressed disappointment that such a letter, carrying the signatures of top European diplomats, could contain what he described as blatant inaccuracies. He went on to criticize the inner workings of EU institutions, alleging the dominance of informal governance and a collapse of moral standards within the European bureaucracy.

“When a document filled with this level of disinformation is published with the signatures of 17 foreign ministers and the EU’s top diplomat, it is very regrettable. Informal governance dominates European structures, and all moral boundaries appear to have vanished. Any lie can now be written even in high-level official statements,” Kobakhidze declared.

The EU ministers’ statement, issued earlier this week, condemns the recent imprisonment and detention of opposition leaders, describing the arrests as politically motivated and clearly designed to silence dissent just months ahead of local elections. The ministers accuse the Georgian government of targeting civil society, peaceful protesters, and independent media, warning that such actions are rapidly dismantling democracy and steering the country toward authoritarianism.
