Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has praised the Ministry of Internal Affairs for what he described as a "very successful" special operation targeting drug trafficking networks, and vowed that the government would remain “uncompromising” in its fight against narcotics crime.
Speaking at a briefing held at the Government Administration on Tuesday, Kobakhidze said that 18 major drug dealers were arrested as part of the latest coordinated law enforcement action. He attributed the operation's success to newly appointed Interior Minister Geka Geladze and his team.
"Less than a month has passed since Mr. Geka Geladze was appointed Minister, and during this period, he has managed to seize an unprecedented amount - 300 kilograms of heroin," the Prime Minister said.
"Today, 18 major drug dealers have been detained. This is a clear message that the government will be uncompromising against drug crime and drug dealers."
Kobakhidze expressed personal gratitude to Minister Geladze, First Deputy Minister Roni Meskhi, and all police and special forces personnel involved in what he described as a complex and well-executed operation.
The PM further emphasized the government’s “firm stance” against narcotics, particularly in protecting the country’s youth from drug abuse.
"We will not give anyone the opportunity to poison our fellow citizens, especially our young people. Effective measures will continue to be taken to prevent such crimes," he said.
Kobakhidze also announced that legislative amendments related to drug policy were expected and will be unveiled in detail on Wednesday.
