Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has vowed that Georgia’s local elections and opposition-led protest planned for 4 October will pass peacefully, while warning that any attempt to break the law will meet a “firm response” from the country’s security services.
Speaking to journalists in Dusheti on Monday, Kobakhidze stressed that both the vote and the demonstration would be conducted in calm conditions.
“October 4 will pass very peacefully, including the elections and the rally. The main thing is that no one thinks of violating the law. If anyone does, they will see the real strength of the new system and the new leadership of our law enforcement agencies,” the prime minister said, adding that he “would not advise” anyone to test this.
Kobakhidze also claimed that the opposition stood no chance of victory in the municipal races, asserting they would fail to win either mayoral or council seats in any of the 64 municipalities.
“In the past, they managed to win in one municipality and in several local councils. This time they cannot win in any of the 64. As for the rally, it will proceed very calmly. There is democracy in Georgia – everyone can gather – but if anyone plans to break the law, they will get the appropriate response,” he said.
