Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has claimed that recent staffing changes were aimed at improving coordination between the country’s law enforcement agencies.

Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze said closer and more formalised cooperation was necessary due to the volume of issues handled on a daily basis by security institutions.

“The basis for the staffing changes is very simple – we need close coordination between law enforcement agencies, and even stronger coordination,” he said.

He noted that similar cooperation had already taken place informally in recent months, including during what he described as the “prevention of the 4 October attempt at revolution”.

“We had very good coordination, but it was not formalised. Now we have the opportunity to continue working with a structured and stronger coordination mechanism,” he said.

Kobakhidze added that law enforcement bodies deal with numerous joint issues on a daily basis and said it was not feasible for him personally to oversee every detail.

“For me personally, it is impossible to follow every issue on a daily basis. That is why introducing a new position is entirely pragmatic,” he said.
