Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday said the construction of a modern and strong Georgian army is, in essence, the construction of peace, while addressing a state awards ceremony for representatives of the Defence Forces of Georgia.
Based on a joint submission by Kobakhidze and Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, President Mikheil Kavelashvili presented state awards to members of the Defense Forces at the Presidential Palace.
Congratulating the award recipients, Kobakhidze noted that officers and service members were honoured with Orders of Honour and Medals of Honour for their contribution to strengthening Georgia’s defence capabilities.
“Today, among us are commanders and leaders of our army, veterans of the 2008 war and fighters seasoned through international missions - people who defended Georgia at the risk of their own lives and who now, from command positions, are building a modern Georgian army,” the Prime Minister said.
He highlighted what he described as fundamental achievements made under their leadership, including the introduction of NATO-standard command doctrines at the General Staff, effective crisis management mechanisms and the “successful” implementation of a “historic reform” of conscription service.
Kobakhidze said new six- and eight-month combat training programmes are already in place, creating a “strong and professional” reserve. He also pointed to the establishment of a new, “transparent and efficient” recruitment and conscription system, which he said has increased the prestige of military service among young people.
The Prime Minister highlighted improvements in military education, noting that Georgian cadets now receive European-level training, while junior officer schools and reserve programmes are shaping the intellectual future of the armed forces. He also highlighted the introduction of a new sergeants’ education system, which he said directly strengthens soldiers’ combat morale.
“You have experienced war and therefore understand the value of peace better than anyone. This experience, combined with patriotism and professionalism, makes you the strongest and most reliable guarantors of Georgia’s security. Building a modern, strong Georgian army means building peace,” Kobakhidze said.
Following the ceremony, President Kavelashvili hosted a formal reception for the award recipients.
