Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday warned that anyone who breaks the law will face legal consequences, stressing that the Government has no desire to see “new prisoners of conscience” in the country.
Speaking to reporters, Kobakhidze said the warning was directed at those considering participation in activities announced by opposition figure Paata Burchuladze, who has called for a revolution.
“We do not enjoy arresting anyone, but if someone violates the law, everyone will have to answer before the law. This is our friendly warning to everyone. We do not need new prisoners of conscience in prison. Therefore, I once again want to warn everyone to refrain from actions that entail strict legal consequences,” the Prime Minister said.
Kobakhidze added that while Burchuladze’s announced revolution would not succeed, it could still lead to arrests.
“Of course, Burchuladze’s revolution will not be successful. However, more people than in previous cases may end up behind bars. Our duty is to warn them properly - they are our citizens. Let no one be surprised if the law responds very strictly to their actions,” he stated.
