Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has dismissed the political significance of former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia’s party returning to Parliament, saying it would neither benefit the opposition nor the party itself.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Kobakhidze said the move reflected “broader instability” within European bureaucracy and international influence over Georgian politics.
“This shows the difficult situation in the European bureaucracy and, more broadly, in the ‘deep state.’ In the end, it cannot change the situation in favour of the opposition. Gakharia and his party add no value to Parliament - they neither gain nor lose anything from this decision,” he said.
Kobakhidze also criticised Gakharia’s party for forming local coalitions with the United National Movement in four municipalities while publicly denying such alliances.
“They became members of Parliament, which means the Parliament is legitimate. Yet they try to justify themselves before the opposition, which puts them in a very weak position,” he added.
He further noted the decision of Gakharia’s party to enter Parliament was “ultimately dictated by external patrons,” a situation he described as unfortunate for the party but beneficial for Georgian democracy and the country.
