Iran’s parliament has voted in favor of closing the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime chokepoint for global oil trade.

According to Iranian media, the final decision on the matter now rests with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Located in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes, through which approximately 20% of global oil supply—around 17 to 18 million barrels per day—passes. It is the only maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.

Several major oil-producing countries line the shores of the strait, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.
