Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has said Ukraine has already achieved a “significant victory” in its war with Russia, arguing that Moscow failed to accomplish its original objective of rapidly overrunning the country.
Crosetto noted that at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, many analysts predicted Kyiv would fall within days. He also recalled that the United States had prepared an aircraft for the possible evacuation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Four years later, the situation is completely different,” Crosetto said, adding that Russian forces are now “stuck on the front line” and are losing around 30,000 troops every month, including those killed and wounded.
The Minister argued that Ukraine has not only preserved its statehood but has also transformed modern warfare, particularly through its extensive use of drones, which he said has become a model for armed forces around the world.
“Ukraine still exists; it is strong and is making the war more difficult for Vladimir Putin every day. It has already won because it never intended to invade Russia - it is simply defending itself,” Crosetto said.
He added that the war would only begin to move towards an end once Russia halted its bombardment of Ukraine for at least 24 to 48 hours, something he said had not happened since the full-scale invasion began.
