Lithuanian MEP Rasa Jukneviciene has praised Georgian journalists and civil society, describing them as embodiments of European values.

“Journalists who fight for freedom are the true symbols of European values. This is what the Sakharov Prize represents. The candidacy of Mzia Amaghlobeli and the Georgian people was presented by all the main political groups. In less than two days, our candidacy was supported by 66 members,” Jukneviciene said.

Amaghlobeli, co-founder of media outlets Netgazeti and Batumelebi, has been nominated for the Sakharov Prize. Her candidacy, together with that of the Georgian people, was submitted on behalf of more than 60 MEPs by Jukneviciene during a joint session of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Development Committees and its Subcommittee on Human Rights.
