The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President, Kaja Kallas, has addressed the detention and hunger strike of Mzia Amaglobeli, the founder of Batumelebi, and Netgazeti media outlets, calling her ‘a symbol of unlawfully imprisoned individuals.’

“Peaceful protesters, journalists, and opposition politicians have become targets simply for exercising their fundamental rights,” Kallas stated, highlighting Amaghlobeli’s case.

“The detention of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli is yet another example of how the authorities treat journalists and those who dare to speak freely,” she added.

Kallas emphasized that “Mzia, who is on hunger strike, represents the courage of all those unjustly detained. Those responsible for violence must be held accountable.”

She urged Georgian authorities to “release all journalists, activists, and individuals unfairly imprisoned for political reasons.”
