Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party, has warned of potential provocations being planned around the country’s Independence Day celebrations on 26 May, vowing that state institutions would act to prevent any unrest.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kaladze, who also serves as the mayor of Tbilisi, suggested that recent remarks by fifth President Salome Zourabichvili had indicated alleged attempts to stir public division.
“May 26 is everyone’s day, and no one has the right to pit society against each other,” Kaladze said. “Of course, the state and its institutions will do everything to prevent such dirty provocations, which were announced by Zourabichvili.”
