Georgia will host the 2029 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, in a joint bid with Armenia, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has announced.
Speaking at a meeting of the Tbilisi municipal government, Kaladze congratulated football fans, describing the decision as a landmark moment for the country.
“For the first time in the history of independent Georgia, the country will host an international-level tournament under FIFA’s auspices, in the form of the Under-20 World Cup,” he said.
He added that co-hosting the tournament alongside Armenia represents both an honour and a significant responsibility.
Kaladze thanked officials from the Georgian Football Federation and FIFA for their support, saying the decision reflected ongoing efforts by the authorities to develop sport in the country, including football infrastructure.
He pointed to projects implemented in cooperation with the federation in Tbilisi, including the construction of new football schools, which he said are essential for youth development.
Kaladze said further investment is planned to strengthen sports infrastructure across cities and regions, expressing confidence that Georgia will host the tournament to a high standard.
