Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has condemned French President Emmanuel Macron's recent remarks regarding the “US ambassador's intervention in French domestic affairs,” labelling them as a demonstration of "double standards" and highlighting “how certain international figures approach smaller nations like Georgia.”
Speaking to local media on Monday, Kaladze said “some individuals seem to believe they have the right to intervene in the internal political matters of an independent, sovereign state. Yet, when faced with similar issues themselves, they quickly object." He further emphasized, "This is a typical example of how certain individuals operate towards smaller countries such as Georgia."
The mayor noted that Georgia “is a nation rich in culture, traditions, and history,” and expressed pride in the country's heritage.
This criticism follows a period of heightened tensions between Georgia and Western nations, particularly concerning the country's pro-European aspirations and recent domestic policies. President Macron earlier expressed concerns over Georgia's crackdown on pro-EU protests and condemned alleged intimidation of civil and opposition figures and police violence against peaceful demonstrators, calling for the release of those arrested.
