The mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, has criticised statements made by several Georgian politicians and public figures that have become the subject of an investigation by the State Security Service of Georgia.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, Kaladze said it was “very unfortunate” when citizens of Georgia make such statements, particularly at a time of heightened international tensions and instability in the region.

The investigation was launched after remarks made in the media by certain political and public figures.

Kaladze said statements based on what he described as false information could pose a serious risk to the country, adding that the decision to begin an investigation had been justified and timely.

“It is very unfortunate when a citizen of our country makes statements of this nature and content, especially when we see what is happening in the world and how difficult the situation is in the region,” he said.

“Making statements based on lies and falsehoods in such circumstances can pose a significant danger. Simply put, it is harmful. Immediate reaction was very important.”

Kaladze added that the individuals concerned had been summoned for questioning and that investigators had specific questions regarding the matter.

He also said that ordinary viewers who hear such claims on television would inevitably question the motives behind them.

“Anyone watching or listening to such statements on television will ask: what is behind this? How can someone make such claims when they could seriously damage our country?” he said.

Kaladze added that the subsequent change in position and later comments made by those involved would likely be understood by the public.
