A tender announced by the Tbilisi Transport Company for the design and construction of a new tram line has concluded, with authorities now reviewing submitted bids.
Speaking at a municipal government meeting on Wednesday, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said four foreign companies had submitted proposals, including three registered in Turkey and one in China. He added that all participants are large and experienced firms with a track record in similar infrastructure projects.
The evaluation process is already under way, with officials analysing the documentation to determine compliance with tender requirements. A winning bidder will be announced once the review is complete, followed by the signing of a contract.
The project aims to connect the district of Didi Digomi with the Didube Metro Station, forming part of efforts to improve the capital’s public transport network, he claimed.
According to the mayor, the planned tram line will run for approximately 7.5 kilometres and include 11 stops. It will begin near the third and fourth microdistricts of Didi Digomi, passing along David Agmashenebeli Alley and through the Digomi area before reaching Didube.
The project also includes the construction of a tram depot designed to service and operate 11 tram units. Once completed, the line will be integrated into the city’s unified transport system, with officials saying it will significantly improve access to public transport and reduce travel times for residents of Didi Digomi.
The tender was conducted in accordance with the procurement rules of the Asian Development Bank.
The project, funded from the state budget, will be implemented in three phases - concept design, detailed design and construction - with a total expected timeline of 36 months.
