The European Union’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas has expressed concern over the political situation in Georgia, saying the country’s government was “not moving in the right direction”.

Speaking in Brussels ahead of a meeting of European Union foreign ministers, Kallas said developments in Georgia were becoming “increasingly worrying.”

“We are discussing the issue of Georgia,” she said. “It must be noted that the situation in the country is becoming more and more serious, which is concerning.”

Kallas also referred to measures already taken by the EU, including visa restrictions imposed on certain Georgian diplomats from 6 March.

She added that the bloc was considering further steps in response to the situation.

“We are also discussing what more we can do, because the Georgian government is clearly not moving in the right direction,” she said.

EU foreign ministers are currently meeting in Brussels to discuss a range of foreign policy issues, including the situation in Georgia.
