Georgia will have no future in the European Union as long as its authorities continue policies that contradict EU values, including suppressing the opposition and pressuring independent media, Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas said.

“Georgia’s main problem is that, on the one hand, the country says it wants to join the European Union and has chosen a European path, while on the other hand we see the Government taking steps in the wrong direction,” Kallas said.

She said the message to the Georgian Government was clear.

“As long as they continue policies of suppressing the opposition, putting pressure on free media and engaging in other actions that go against EU values, Georgia will have no future in the European Union,” she added.
