EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos on Monday said the European Union’s goal is to ensure that Georgia remains closely connected to the bloc while preserving the EU’s ability to defend its strategic interests.

Speaking at a meeting of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Kos voiced concern over recent developments in Georgia, warning that the country risks drifting away from its European path.

“Recent legislation developed in Georgia raises serious concerns. An autocratic system of state control over political expression is increasingly pushing the country away from the European future desired by the majority of its population,” Kos said.

“Our goal is for Georgia to remain closely linked to the European Union and for us to preserve our ability to defend the interests of the European Union,” she added.
