An opposition leader Levan Khabeishvili, has accused a witness of giving false testimony during a court hearing, alleging the individual was involved in an assault against him.

Speaking in court, Khabeishvili, who chairs the political council of the United National Movement, addressed an employee of the Special Tasks Department, claiming the witness had participated in what he described as a criminal act.

“You were involved in the crime committed against me. I am telling you that you were there,” he said, also accusing the witness of lying while under oath.

Khabeishvili rejected claims that he had offered money, and challenged the witness to clarify the alleged source of such an offer.

He further claimed that he had met the individual at the parliament building the following day, in the presence of other officials.

Khabeishvili also linked the case to the political situation in Georgia, calling for what he described as fair elections and the release of detainees.

He also referred to ongoing protests on Rustaveli Avenue, saying demonstrators were demanding the release of prisoners and new elections.

The next court hearing is scheduled for 24 April.
