Levan Machavariani, Deputy Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream parliamentary faction on Monday commented on planned LGBT marches in Ukraine, stating that people who view the Ukrainian Government as a national authority should adopt a more critical perspective.

In a post on social media, Machavariani said the developments are taking place against the backdrop of the ongoing Russia–Ukraine War, which he said has caused severe humanitarian and infrastructural damage in the country.

“Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine entering its fifth year, with up to a million people dead, tens of millions left homeless and virtually the entire country’s infrastructure destroyed,” Machavariani wrote.

He also referred to a decision by Ukraine’s Supreme Court recognising a same-sex couple consisting of two men as a family.

Machavariani further noted that Pride events have already been held in Kharkiv and that two Kyiv LGBT marches are now planned in Kyiv.

“Those who consider Ukraine’s Government a national authority should now begin to think a little more critically,” he wrote.
