A senior member of Georgia’s ruling party has warned opposition politicians that defying legal procedures will not go without consequences, following their release on bail for failing to appear before a parliamentary investigative commission probing alleged crimes under the United National Movement Government between 2003-2012.
Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee, said on Tuesday those who show "contempt for society and the law" must be prepared to face the appropriate response.
“It is up to these people to decide what strategy they will choose and what approach they will have,” Makhashvili told reporters. “But everyone should know they are ready for appropriate responsibility. Contempt for society and legislation will result in an appropriate response.”
His remarks were directed at opposition politicians who refused to attend commission hearings, claiming political persecution. Despite being released on bail, they continue to challenge the legitimacy of the process.
“They are breaking the law, and this cannot be justified by saying they are protesting something,” Makhashvili said. “There is a law that needs to be respected. They know what consequences their actions may have, and the choice is theirs.”
