Chairman of the European Integration Committee and member of the Georgian Parliament’s delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Levan Makhashvili, addressed the joint session of OSCE committees, focusing on Georgia’s security and international challenges.

“Based on our experience of three wars with Russia in the 1990s and 2008, as well as the ongoing occupation of two of Georgia’s historic regions, we realized that the only way to survive these severe geopolitical earthquakes was to set emotions aside and act pragmatically,” Makhashvili stated.

He emphasized that to ensure peace and maintain statehood, Georgia has made difficult but necessary decisions over the past three years—decisions grounded in a realistic assessment of threats.

“Despite being labeled in various ways by ‘hotheads,’ the only thing we have been doing is ensuring the survival of our country. The developments surrounding Russia’s war in Ukraine confirm one thing—Georgia has made the right decisions.”

Makhashvili stressed that for Georgia and many small states represented in the assembly, correctly determining the next steps amid the current geopolitical shifts requires caution and unity.

“We can only overcome this difficult period by supporting one another, not through unlawful foreign interference in each other’s domestic affairs or by undermining one another with disinformation. Only through solidarity and mutual respect for each other’s democratic processes can we protect our societies from destabilization caused by external influence,” he concluded.

The Georgian delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly includes Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Nikoloz Samkharadze, European Integration Committee Chairman Levan Makhashvili, and Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Maia Bitadze.

The information was released by the Parliament’s press service.
