Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili has pushed back against recent comments made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accusing Republican Congressman Joe Wilson of framing the issue with a “completely disinformational” question during a congressional hearing on May 21.
In an interview with Rustavi 2, Botchorishvili said Rubio’s response to Wilson’s question revealed that the US lacks a clear, defined position on Georgia within the framework of its national interests.
“The only conclusion we can draw from today’s response is that there is no solid or consistent position on Georgia in terms of US national interests,” she stated.
Botchorishvili criticized Congressman Wilson—an outspoken critic of the Georgian Dream party and co-author of the MEGOBARI Act—for distorting the reality of the situation in Georgia.
“Before evaluating Rubio’s answer, we need to look at the framing of the question itself. Joe Wilson’s remarks were entirely based on falsehoods,” she said. “Every statement he made about Georgia was detached from reality and riddled with disinformation.”
She emphasized that Wilson’s comments misrepresented both the state of the upcoming parliamentary elections and the character of the Georgian government.
“There is no anti-American government in Georgia. When we assess our administration’s priorities, they are fully aligned—ideologically and strategically—with those of the current US administration,” she added.
Botchorishvili stressed the importance of viewing Rubio’s comments in the broader context of the hearing, which focused heavily on US national interests. “It’s clear that American foreign policy is currently shaped first and foremost by national interest. That’s the lens through which Georgia was discussed—not necessarily a reflection of any defined US policy stance toward us.”
During the May 21 hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Wilson questioned Secretary Rubio about Georgia, claiming the country is governed by an “anti-American” administration.
“Is it our national interest having an anti-American government governing an important part of the world?” Wilson asked. “And on that, not to take appropriate actions to impose cost on that government?”
Rubio replied that the matter was under review by the State Department, which is considering “additional options” but has not yet made a decision.
“We are working with our regional bureaus and teams on the ground to determine which measures would be most effective in holding this anti-American government accountable,” Rubio stated.
