Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili stated that the Georgian Parliament’s response to the recently adopted US MEGOBARI Act will be of significant importance.

“I welcome the Georgian Parliament’s reaction to the MEGOBARI Act. Of course, the Parliament’s position on this document will be crucial and cannot be overlooked, as it was adopted by the legislative body of the United States. This document will, to a certain extent, shape future US positions regarding Georgia, and we cannot ignore it. Therefore, a formal stance and statement from the Georgian Parliament is certainly welcome,” Botchorishvili said.

The Georgian Parliament is expected to adopt a formal statement on the MEGOBARI Act in the coming days.

The MEGOBARI Act (Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence), passed by the US House of Representatives on May 5 with a bipartisan vote of 349–42, has also been registered in the US Senate. The act aims to support democratic institutions and counter foreign authoritarian influence in Georgia, particularly from Russia, China, and Iran.

The legislation urges the US government to reassess its relationship with the Georgian government if it strays from its Euro-Atlantic integration path. It also mandates regular reporting on Russian intelligence operations and sanctions evasion in Georgia and authorizes sanctions against individuals deemed to be undermining Georgian democracy.
