Macron condemns Russian airstrike on Sumy, urges stronger action to enforce ceasefire

French President Emmanuel Macron strongly condemned a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Saturday morning, which left 31 civilians dead and at least 83 wounded, including children. In a post on social media platform X, Macron blamed Russia for perpetuating the war and ignoring diplomatic initiatives.

“This morning, two Russian missiles struck the heart of the city of Sumy in Ukraine, causing numerous civilian casualties, including children once again,” Macron wrote. “Everyone knows: this war was initiated by Russia alone. And today, it is clear that Russia alone chooses to continue it — with blatant disregard for human lives, international law, and the diplomatic efforts of President Trump.”

Macron called for “strong measures” to impose a ceasefire on Russia and reiterated France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in coordination with international allies.

“To the victims, the wounded, and all of Ukraine that continues to resist: our solidarity, our respect, our unwavering commitment,” he added.

The strike on Sumy is one of several recent escalations amid stalled peace talks and ongoing international efforts to end the conflict. Macron’s remarks come amid growing calls in Europe and beyond for a tougher stance on Russia’s continued military aggression.
