Vice Prime Minister and State Minister for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies Mamuka Mdinaradze has criticised comments made by Peter Fischer, saying the diplomat has failed to understand how to address the Georgian people, the Georgian state and the choices made by its citizens.
Speaking at a government briefing, Mdinaradze accused Fischer of remaining attached to “outdated narrative and messaging strategy,” while continuing to use language that he said was disrespectful to the democratic choices of Georgian voters.
Mdinaradze claimed Georgians elected the current government because of its commitment to independent decision-making, national sovereignty and state interests. He argued that criticism from representatives of European countries undermines public confidence in European institutions and contributes to growing Euroscepticism.
The vice prime minister said that what he described as unfair treatment of Georgia by some international actors was a key factor behind scepticism towards the European Union among parts of the population.
Mdinaradze added that Georgia remained committed to joining the European Union, but said the country seeks membership as a sovereign state rather than accepting policies imposed by external actors.
He also criticised the current leadership of European institutions, claiming that recent messaging towards Georgia has failed to reflect the views of the majority of Georgian society.
